Meet Athena, an energetic 3-and a half year old Rottweiler mix. She was referred to Miami Veterinary Specialists by her primary care veterinarian for a surgery consultation. After a fun day at the beach, Athena started limping on her left hind limb. The limping did not stop for a week. She also has a past history of an unknown trauma to her left hip when she was a puppy.

She was seen by our very own Dr. Juan Sardinas, one of our-board certified surgeons and one of the owners of our practice. He carefully went over the different surgical options available for Athena with her owners. It was decided that a TPLO was the best surgery that would fix her lameness.

A Tibial-plateau-leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is a surgery performed on dogs to stabilize the stifle joint after ruptures of the cranial cruciate ligament (one of the most important stabilizers inside the knee joint). Dr. Sardinas performed a successful TPLO on Athena. It was only one day after the surgery that Athena was able to go back home. She is currently on an excellent path to recovery, which means that she will be back to having fun at the beach with her family in no time!
