Meet Maggie, a small 3-year old Yorkie. She was presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists due to her left hindlimb non-weight bearing lameness.
Maggie began showing intermittent left hindlimb lameness in August. She then began receiving laser therapy in the hopes of correcting the problem. However, one day she let out a yelp and stopped placing any weight on her hind limb. She was then referred to MVS for a consultation with one of our Board-Certified Surgeons.
She was seen by Dr. Alvaro Larin, one of our Board-Certified Surgeons and one of the owners of our practice. During the examination, Dr. Larin was able to diagnose Maggie with both Cranial Cruciate Ligament Tear (CCLT) and Bilateral Medial Patella Luxation (BMPL). A CCLT is when the cruciate ligament, which is one of the most important stabilizers inside the canine knee joint, is torn. On the other hand, a BMPL is when the patella (kneecap) pops out of place in a medial position.
Dr. Larin carefully discussed the best options for Maggie with her owners. It was decided that surgery was the best option to correct her limb lameness. Dr. Larin performed a successful surgery to correct and stabilize the left patella/ stifle. Maggie is now recovering well back at home. She will be back for more a few bandage changes and rechecks before being able to play and run with no problem!
